SMA: Empowering South Memphis Communities Since 2000

Founded in 2000, SMA began its mission to organize neighborhood associations within the urban communities of South Memphis. Over the years, the organization has broadened its services to support families in crisis and youth in foster care. Despite its growth, SMA remains committed to its fundamental belief that civic engagement forms the foundation of strong communities, which in turn fosters stable families.

SMA's Work Centers Around Four Key Initiatives:

  • Dream Seekers Initiative: This program supports young people in foster care and those transitioning out, offering services such as financial literacy, goal setting, job readiness, and essential life skills.
  • PREP (Personal Responsibility Education Program): This initiative provides comprehensive sex education along with training in social and life skills.
  • Community Action Panel: Comprising community leaders from over a dozen civic groups and neighborhood associations in South Memphis, this panel fosters collaboration and community engagement.
  • Social Suds Resource Center: Located within a neighborhood laundromat, this center offers a wide range of social services to the laundromat's patrons.
